$6 Haircuts

$6 haircuts... yes, you heard right, $6 haircuts. There's a place on the northeast corner of Dundas West and Kensington Avenue that cuts men's hair for 6 bucks (and women $7).

I've been going to this place for awhile. Originally they were located right on Kensington Avenue and only charged $4. A friend from church told me about it.

Yes, the cuts are basic. But what do you expect at that price? And even though they barely speak English what do you really need to say when you walk in the doors (especially if you're a guy)? To me there isn't an awful lot you can do with men's hair. It's really all very simple. Normally I just go in and say, cut short, and they take it from there.

Dinner with Auntie Mary

After the wedding ceremony everyone went down from the sanctuary to the gym for refreshments and to take group shots. Daphne stayed with Auntie Mary until I finished.

We went to Chinatown afterwards. Auntie Mary wanted to go shopping for food. I waited in the car while they walked around.

After they finished shopping we went to Rol Jui for dinner. We order Auntie Mary some fish congee and Daphne and I split a plate of beef and tomato on rice and chicken and tofu on rice. They also brought us some soup as a starter and some sweet, green bean soup for dessert. It's kind of like red bean soup, but not red. It was tasty.

It's always great going out with Auntie Mary. She always has a lot of interesting stories to tell.

Sunday Lunch at Rol Jui

Every Sunday after church I head over to Chinatown for lunch. Normally it's with one or two of my other church friends depending on who shows up. We've been going to the same restaurant without fail for quite a few years now. It's called Rol Jui. Their food is decent as far as I'm concerned and since we're regulars they give us the weekday lunch special discount. You can get a plate of rice, chow mien or rice noodles with various toppings for $4.25. Plus they'll throw in a bowl of soup and the usual pot of green tea. With tax and tip it works out quite reasonably.

As well as the lovely lunch we've made friends with the waitstaff and other regular patrons. In this photo are Reggie, his sister Renu and their friend Derek. Reggie and Renu go to another nearby church. I used to see them come in and have lunch every Sunday just like our gang. Finally I went over and introduced myself. It's nice making new friends in places you never thought you would. Another benefit of being a regular at a particular eating establishment for sure.
